Morningstar’s 2013 CIA winners
Annual awards recognize best mutual funds, ETFs, professionals and brokerages in Canada.
As telegraphed last week on the Morningstar.ca site here, ETFs continued to play a bigger role in the annual Morningstar Awards held Wednesday evening, despite the fact the event began in 1995 strictly as the Academy Awards of mutual funds. After several years with the CBC’s Peter Mansbridge as Master of Ceremonies, Morningstar went with another broadcaster this year: BNN’s Catherine Murray.
This change drew the evening’s most bizarre acceptance speech when one award recipient—we’ll spare him the indignity of publishing his name here—welcomed the switch and railed against Mansbridge’s oft-repeated anecdotes at previous editions of the awards.
More ETFs crashing the party
And now as they say, the envelopes please. Vanguard Investments Canada Inc. won the 2013 Morningstar ETF Provider of the Year. Best Equity ETF went to Vanguard US Total Market Index ETF CAD-Hedged, while Horizons ETFs Management took home the Best Fixed-Income ETF with its Horizons Active Floating Rate Bond ETF. Best Specialty ETF went to BlackRock Canada’s iShares Fundamental Japan Index ETF. BMO ETFs won the ETF Initiative Award.
Mawer cleans up
Meanwhile back in mutual fund land, Mawer Investment Management Ltd. won Analysts’ Choice Fund Company of the Year; in addition Mawer Global Small Cap fund manager Paul Moroz won the Morningstar Foreign Equity Fund Manager of the Year, beating out Francis Chou and the team behind Mackenzie Ivy Foreign Equity. Mawer also won Best Canadian Equity Fund, Best Global Balanced Fund and best Global Small/Midcap Equity Fund. Mawer also did well in the pooled fund category, taking home Best Canadian Equity Pooled Fund and Best Global Balanced Pooled Fund.
The other firm that did well in pooled funds was Burgundy Asset Management, which won Best Canadian Balanced Pooled Fund, Best Canadian Small/Mid Cap Equity, Best Global Equity Pooled Fund and Best International Equity Pooled Fund.
Fidelity Investments Canada won Advisor’s Choice Fund Company of the Year (edging out runnerups CI Investments Inc. and Invesco Canada Ltd.)
Domestic equity fund winner was the Beutel Goodman Canadian Equity team, and Templeton Global Bond won fixed-income manager of the year, also taking home Best Global Fixed-Income Fund for Templeton Global Bond.
Soutar wins Career Achievement
The coveted Career Achievement Award went to Ian Soutar, co-founder of Pembroke Management Ltd. This was accompanied by a 5-minute video of the founding of the firm and one of the longer acceptance speeches of the evening.
Beutel Goodman won Best US Equity Fund and Trimark US Small Companies won best US small/midcap equity fund. Among some of the newer fund companies (relative to the old guard of AGF and Mackenzie), Steadyhand Investment Funds Inc. won Best Canadian Balanced Fund, Brandes won for its Emerging Markets fund, and EdgePoint Wealth Management Inc. won Best Global Equity Fund. Best International Equity Fund went to CI Black Creek International Equity.
BMO wins Best Online Brokerage
Best Online Brokerage went to BMO InvestorLine, edging out Qtrade Investor and Questrade. The IFIC Investor Education Award went to Investors Group for its Money and Youth initiative, entitled “Helping youth prepare for their financial future.”
