Never arrive at the stadium hungry since concessions are notoriously expensive. Instead, plan to dine at a nearby restaurant either before or after the game. Don’t forget to ask for a game-day discount as many local eateries are hungry for fan business.
Attend preseason training camp sessions and open practices to get a closer look at your favourite stars in action. It’s not uncommon for athletes to invite fans on the field, pose for pictures or sign autographs at these free events, so bring your trading cards and cameras.
Why pay when you can go for free? FIFA is training volunteers to staff the 2014 World Cup in Brazil for instance. Closer to home most stadiums use volunteers to sell 50/50 draw tickets during games. A lot of the work is done between periods so you can watch the match from the concourse level.
Consider splitting season tickets with friends or buying tickets in bulk and selling some off at face value to subsidize the cost of games you want to attend. Big employers often offer discounted tickets, while scalpers and the box office also cut ticket prices after kick-off.
Bummed that your team is at the bottom of the standings? On the plus side, official merchandise is discounted after a team’s playoff dreams are dashed. Tickets for losing teams can also be cheaper than for front-runners. Or ditch the big leagues altogether. Think AHL instead of NHL.
