A Labour Market Impact Assessment is a document that most Canadian employers are required to obtain from Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC) before hiring a temporary foreign worker.
This document shows two things:
An LMIA is a prerequisite for a work permit application. The employer applies for the LMIA. Once obtained, it’s used by a foreign worker as part of their work permit application. Learn more about the LMIA from the Government of Canada.
Example: Nathan lives and works in Australia, but he wants to move to Canada. Because he is neither a Canadian citizen nor a permanent resident, he’d first have to apply for a work permit—for which he would need a job offer letter from a Canadian employer along with an LMIA.
