A work permit allows a foreign national to work in Canada legally for a specific amount of time. These permits are issued by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). There are two broad types:
There are also specific open work permits for certain categories of people. For example, the post-graduation work permit (PGWP) allows graduates of a designated learning institution (DLI) to work in Canada for eight months to three years, depending on the length of the study program they have completed. A bridging open work permit (BOWP) is for people who have applied for, or will soon apply for, permanent residency.

Example: Diego came to Canada from Mexico and currently resides in Ontario.
