About 20% of the occupations in Canada are regulated, either by the federal government the provincial and territorial governments. Newcomers who work in these occupations need to show that the licences or certificates they’ve received in another country are recognized as valid by the appropriate regulatory authority in Canada. The process of verifying a newcomer’s credentials and work experience for this purpose is known as foreign credential recognition.
Examples of regulated professions include accountants, architects, electricians, physicians, nurses and teachers.
Newcomers in regulated professions may qualify for funding and support from the Foreign Credential Recognition Program (FCRP), managed by Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC). The program is intended to support the labour market integration of skilled newcomers by making the credential recognition process easier. Read more about the credential assessment process on the ESDC website.
Example: “Tara moved to Canada with three years of experience as an architect in India. Before she searches for work in Toronto, she needs to have her Indian education credentials evaluated by the Canadian Architectural Certification Board.”
