The Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS) is a monthly payment from the Government of Canada to low-income Canadian residents aged 65 and older. To qualify, you must be receiving the Old Age Security (OAS) pension and have a maximum income below a certain threshold. This threshold varies depending on your marital status, and whether or not you have a spouse or common-law partner who receives OAS and GIS payments.
Many people who qualify for the GIS are automatically enrolled. If this happens, you will receive a letter from the government after you turn 64. If you’re eligible but haven’t been automatically enrolled, you can contact OAS and apply.
GIS payments are not taxable, but you still must file an income tax return by April 30 each year or payments may be disrupted.
Example: “After Rosa started receiving GIS payments, her husband applied for the additional Allowance benefit, available to eligible spouses and common-law partners.”
