Surging appreciation and a low loonie have created a perfect storm

Despite the dismal investing environment, it appears Lady Luck is smiling on Canadians who own U.S. real estate these days. Over the last five years, American housing market prices have risen substantially and this, combined with the low loonie, has created the ideal time to unload a property. For instance, homes in Scottsdale, Ariz., have appreciated on average a staggering 66% since 2011, with about 12% of that surge occuring within the last year alone. Add in the 30% boost you get when converting the American cash back to Canadian funds and you’ve got a great reason to sell.
