Before you pull out your credit card for that next car repair be sure to find out if you have a secret car warranty. When automakers discover that some component or system in a given model is failing at a high rate, they can initiate a service campaign (sent to all known owners) or offer an extended warranty offering subsidized or free repairs (which is only sent to dealers’ service departments). This information isn’t always easy to come by, particularly if you’re a second or third owner. Go to consumerreports.org/car-recall-tracker to find out if your next car repair is free.
