The first tip? Sell privately

“How can I get more money for my used vehicle?”
—Mark Ehmann, Bowmanville, Ont.
Selling your vehicle privately will almost always result in more money, especially if it’s a popular model that sells easily. A good rule when trying to obtain more for a used vehicle from a dealer is to stay with the same make. A franchised dealer with in-house parts and robust marketing support from the manufacturer for their brand will almost certainly offer more than a dealer selling a competing brand. If you are planning to buy a different make or not trading against another vehicle, you should go directly to the used car department of the dealership for an appraisal. That’s because the policy in some vehicle showrooms is to refuse to appraise your used car unless you commit to purchasing a new vehicle from the same dealership.
